Tuesday at the games
Last week we decided to buy tickets for the athletics for today, so we headed into flinders street on the train then to the MCG by tram. We were in the top section of the old stand – the great southern stand – of course it isnt that old but compared to the rest of the ground it is the oldest stand. From there the stadium looks huge, but you dont feel too far from the action. We saw a number of events, and on some occasions there was multiple events going on at the same time, we saw 110m hurdle heats, 400m hurdle heats, high jump for women’s pentathlon, 110m hurdles, discus & pole vault for men’s heptathlon, discus heats, and some EAD track events.
Was good to see lots of different events all happening at once, though some tended to drag on a lot, the men’s pole vault for the heptathlon there was always a long gap between drops, but any way it was a great day.
One of the things I was amazed at was the lighting setup that was obviously there for the ceremonies, there were about 700 intelligent lights, a mixture of spots and profiles. I am really looking forward to the closing ceremony we worked out that we are in the bottom tier, hopefully our view isnt too obscured by the balcony above us. We think we are some where near where the queen was sitting, at least on that side of the venue. The PA system that they have is amazing, blows away the PA system at AAMI stadium (except when U2 eventually play there I am sure), didnt get photos of the PA I totally forgot, but it was awesome, the bass response that they were getting was far and above any football stadium around (maybe not as good as Stadium Australia, but I have never been there).
Well that is it for today, Wednesday we will be packing to move over to my Uncle and Aunties house for the remainder of our time here, it will be easier to get into the city from there and on Friday I will be heading to the docklands region for the men’s 50km walk, then on Saturday I’ll probably head to the Vic Markets and Sunday head into town again for the cycling road race and then of course the closing ceremony. Looking forward to all of that, but then that means I have to go home and back to work, what a drag
