My xbox Media Center Experience
After my xbox sitting doing nothing for some time I decided to resurrect it and make it useful. After some discussion with a few people they were talking about using xbox media center to stream movies & music from computer to xbox media center. So after spending a few hours Saturday afternoon/night trying to find the settings to make it work I gave up in disgust – until Sunday afternoon whilst watching Ford win another round of the V8s, some one suggested I get the latest version of media center and try that.
I was hesitant doing that, cos I really don’t know how the xbox interface works, or how to install a program. So I went about reading how to install the latest version, I downloaded what I thought was the latest version of the program from here only to find it was only the source and I had to compile – which I was looking forward to.
I did some more searching and found that most of the bit torrent sites around the place have the compiled versions available, so I downloaded that swiftly whilst looking for how to install. I found that there was no install process for the xbox, you simply had to ftp the files into the right location and away you went.
Once the torrent was fully downloaded I unzipped it and uploaded it and the new xbox media center was installed. I thought beauty problem solved. But it wasn’t the first thing I tried was SMB share – standard windows sharing – it was constantly asking me for my username and password, I don’t usually use on my home computer, so I decided to set one up. Still didn’t work, i thought that is strange so I tried to access my server, which is basically setup the same as my computer (except it has a firewall installed) and it worked fine – never asked for a password. So I scratched my head for a bit longer and decided to find out what the other options were, one was XBMSP, so i looked into that and download a program called ccxgui which allowed me to share whatever I wanted on my computer. I went to my xbox hopeful, YES IT WORKED.
It worked and it even allows you to watch multi-part zip files – which most torrents end up being. So I was impressed and I no longer have to watch all my downloaded tv eps on my computer, now I just have to get a dvd remote for the xbox and I am away.
