phew, almost lost it
Well a hard drive died on me on Monday and I thought I lost everything off it (it was all my music – all 50GB of it). Yes the hard drive was certainly unreadable but luckily not totally lost, there was bad sectors which corrupted the indexes and it rendered it usless to windows. Luckily this has happened a few times at work and it has required us to purchase some disc recovery software called Stellar Phoenix FAT & NTFS. It takes ages cos it reads every single sector on the disc but it eventually reads the data off the disc and then it takes ages again and gets the data off it that you want. I am glad I didnt have to start my music collection from scrap again.
This has pushed me further into looking for a new computer, I have been slowly browsing and investigating the current available technology and had come up with an AMD AM2 X2 based system – which means new RAM, motherboard and video as well and possibly and new SATAII hard drive as well. But with the new Intel Core 2 Duo (or Conroe as they were known during development) processors out next week I am at a loss which way to go. AnandTech have done some testing and it is looking like the Intel is better, and of course because the Intel is supposed to be better AMD has dropped the pricing of their competing processors ahhh what am I to do?
There are other reviews too:
Tom’s Hardware
ZDNET
Very undecided and will probably leave it for about a month and hope by then there is more user feedback on the intel chips and the usual early adopter problems are out of the way with the new motherboards also and perhaps an early adopter price drop also

Hey dude glad you got those mp3s back, that sucks when it happens and I had never heard of that software, good to hear that is around if you ever need it.
When it comes to new PC have fun choosing I just bought my self and AM2 system and I am spewing about the price drop and the conroe definetely look good, but I am an AMD fan so I am sticking with them
Hey dude, glad you didn’t lose all your mp3’s, we need to get together so that we can exchange downloads sometime soon. Oh and I reckon go the Conroe but definetely wait till there are more independent reviews out there.
Cheers.
PS Basketball will be back soon
