2006 in Review
It has been a great year this year for me I reckon, in some ways it has been fairly busy with work and a few other things but it has also been a fairly slow year at the same time. Since leaving GG (and for sometime before leaving) my friendship group has decreased in size dramatically which has lead to mostly quiet Friday and Saturday nights – mostly relegated to watching AFL on TV Friday and Saturday nights during the winter and during summer going to 36ers home games or just home usually watching DVDs or playing various games on the computer. This hasn’t been all bad, but going out more often is something on top of my list for 2007.
January – I made my largest single purchase for the year – a Nikon D50 dSLR camera, it has been with me to a stack of events that I have been to this year, and it has taken many photos – I am sure I will mention more of them during this post. I went to a couple of SA Cricket games – including a game against Tasmania – mainly to see Adam Polkinghorne playing for Tasmania with, Mike, Kristen, Chelsea, Mum & Dad – it was my first game of cricket for a while, and it rain – typical.
February – I attended the One Day International Tri-Series Final at Adelaide Oval, which Australia won fairly comfortably – it was my first International Cricket game that I had been too for a while, really enjoyed it, and got a few photos of the day with the recently purchased dSLR. 36ers lost another Elimination Final at home, sadly the Lightning lost a home Preliminary Final to eventual Champions Canberra.
March – I was in Melbourne for a while for the Commonwealth Games, this was an awesome experience and one I am glad that I participated in (only has a spectator). I attended the recently renovated MCG for the second (& third) time, sat in the Great Southern Stand (in the top section) for Athletics, and the New MCG Members stand for closing ceremony. Will definitely be attending a similar event if we ever get the opportunity to – long term plan is to attend the next Men’s Basketball World Championship in 2010 at a minimum (don’t even know where it is yet).
April – Was a bit of a slow month, but I went up to Mallala over Easter for the Historic Racing, it was a good weekend (got sun burnt in a 20deg day:) ), it was good to see the old Birrana cars racing. Also Kristen got me a freebie ticket for the Adelaide Motorshow from work, so went to that – and realised why I decided years ago not to pay for it – it was a complete waste of time – will only ever go with a freebie ticket in the future. Went to the ANZAC Day Football match at the Adelaide Oval, between the Eagles and Centrals, luckily the Eagles beat the Doggies.
May – Went to Living End concert at Thebarton Theatre with Mike and Kristen, they put on yet another great show and later I purchased the DVD of the Melbourne show from the same tour. Sadly I wasn’t allowed to have my dSLR in the crowd.
June – Went over to Victoria, stayed at families place for a night – really should plan a couple of extra days next time I go over, funny how as you get older family becomes more and more important (well for some people at least). Main reason for the trip was V8s at Winton, I stayed at Mansfield Country Resort – on Lake Eildon – which was bone dry where I was staying, although it did have water elsewhere. I spent a week in Mansfield sleeping in, and generally not doing a lot which was very relaxing and something I really needed. After I got home I scored a freebie ticket to the CAMS Nationals Series at Mallala and went up for an excellent weekend of racing.
July – middle of winter – didn’t do a lot when it was cold – it didn’t rain much – but we had some cold temperatures. We did have Chelsea’s second birthday – which involved at least 2 get togethers, it was a great time, she is really starting to be aware of what people are doing – almost too smart for her own good. 36ers, Lightning and the Dome was sold – and the potential for a great year for both teams was hoped for.
August – it was still quite cool and didn’t do a lot. Did go to Rally SA – but after wasting my money last year in the spectator area, I decided to do some research on the net and found some old maps of various stages and went up through the forest and various areas and found a couple of excellent viewing spots and got some great photos. Also scored a freebie ticket from a person at Clovey for the State Motor Racing Championship at Mallala and headed up for that also.
September – Niece no.2 was born, Briannah Kristen, a sister for Chelsea, she is as cute as Chelsea – actually looking at babies photos of them you would have a hard time telling them apart – Briannah had brown hair compared to Chelsea’s redish with blonde tips.
October – Ford win Bathurst (whilst I was in a house full of Holden Fans) and the Eagles win the SANFL Grand Final – all in the same day – what an awesome day it was. Briannah’s first Bathurst and she is priveledged to see Ford winning it. Although it was an all rosy weekend with Mark Porter dieing on the Friday in an horrific accident in the V8 Development Series Race.
November – My Birthday and U2 – that was enough to make it an awesome month – U2 what can I say we had wait almost a year since buying the tickets and it was well worth the wait – although having to stand for a number of hours to get down near the front sucked, it was all forgotten about once they hit the stage.
December – the Phillip Island Farce – I went away to see a great weekend only to be spoilt by pRick Kelly and the rest of his Holden buddies. Sorry, but that doesn’t win you fans and if your actions weren’t bad enough you words after the race and since have made you even more undeserving of your shallow victory – I will be leading the chorus of geers at you at Clipsal if I go.
It has been a sad year with a number of deaths of high profile people
Steve Irwin – The Crocodile Hunter
Peter Brock – The Women Hunter – or more commonly the King of the Mountain
Mark Porter – The unknown King of the Mountain
Belinda Emmett
Larry Knight – the forgotten miner at Beaconsfield, Tasmania
Richard Carleton – reporter, the other casualty of the Beaconsfield incident
Pro Hart
Peter Boyle – Ray Barone’s Dad
Red Auerbach – Champion Boston Celtics Coach
Pat Moriati – Karate Kid’s Mr Miyagi
Aaron Spelling
Earl Woods – Tiger’s dad
Ariel Sharon

Hey good review of the year.
I notice you questioned if Saddam would be executed in our lifetime – you can add him to your list of notable deaths for the year. Lets see if that does anything to the peace in Iraq
