Well I hope you had a great Australia Day, I did listening to Hottest 100, watching the Aussie thrash the Poms in the Cricket and having a barbie with lamb. Can’t complain especially when you get the day off hey!

Hottest 100 I reckon was one of the better ones in recent times, my eventual picks were up there including:
The Hard Road – Hill Top Hoods
Black Finger Nails, Red Wine – Eskimo Joe
Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol
Dani California – RHCP
Wake Up – Living End
Rip It Up – Jet

My Other Votes which didn’t make it included
Long Live the Weekend – Living End
Black Cat – Living End

All in all it was a good countdown, I thought Eskimo Joe was going to take it out but Augie March took it out – head over to the j’s website to see the whole list. And if you missed the countdown or just want to listen to it again they have set up streams so that you can.

Well it is coming up to that time of the year again, with voting beginning on New Years Day for what I believe is still the only countdown of its kind in the world. I have been regularly listening to this since 1996 (pre-Powderfinger domination ), personally I think it has gone down significantly. I don’t know I think that, it has just felt that the actual music quality has gone down over the years – or maybe it just my music taste – I don’t know.

Originally it was the 100 best songs of all time – voted by phone or mail I guess – what was the internet in 1989, now it is the 100 best songs for the year – voted by a funny thing called the internet – voting opens Jan 1 & other information here. Now I dont know about you but can you name the best 100 songs for the last year – is the list too long, looking back maybe not – there has been some songs I think are great in the bottom 50 – just last year Jesus of Suburbia (I reckon it was the longest song in the history of Hottest 100s). 2005 was the Wolfmother v Bernard Fanning fight with Bernard coming out on top of the countdown, but he only had 2 songs on the list whilst Wolfmother had 6 – 2 in the top 10.

I think we are having a party – and of course it luckily falls on the same day as a one day cricket game against England so we can watch the Aussie’s win that at the same time as listening to the Hottest 100 – although I hear there maybe some JTV stuff on ABC2 during the countdown?

Some of my Tips

Living End – perennial visitors to the Hottest 100 – since entering the countdown in 1997 they haven’t missed a countdown and will definitely be getting a vote from me

Wolfmother – again

Bernard Fanning – again (2007 will be back to Powderfinger no doubt)

Hill Top Hoods (The Hard Road – my tip for a top ten finish)

Ben Lee

The Audreys

Youth Group

Rouge Traders – shiver

What can I say, where do I start.

I got to AAMI Stadium at about 8:20 to queue up for the ellipse, it was a damn long day waiting but it was more than worth it. The concert was awesome, I have seen a number of their DVDs (Elevation, Live at Slane Castle, Vertigo) and they were all awesome concerts, but seeming them live just blew them away. It is hard to compare – bit like trying to compare a Commodore
to a Ferrari – it cant be done. Having seen the Vertigo DVD sort of knew what to expect with the stage setup, but being there just blew me away, the huge led screen behind them, the massive speak stacks the simply but damn effective lighting it was a great show. We managed to get into the ellipse and saw the guys coming down the right hand side ellipse, was only a couple of metres away from them. Did I mention it was awesome, if not I’ll mention it again, the concert was awesome. I felt the affects
on Friday of standing from about 3pm till about 11pm with sore feet but who cares, it was more than worth it.

Set List
City Of Blinding Lights
Vertigo
Elevation
I Will Follow
New Year’s Day
Beautiful Day / Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (part) / Here Comes The Sun (part)
Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of
Angel Of Harlem / I Should Be So Lucky (part)
Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own
Love And Peace Or Else
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Bullet The Blue Sky / When Johnny Comes Marching Home (snippet) / The Hands That Built America (snippet)
Miss Sarajevo
Pride (In The Name Of Love)
Where The Streets Have No Name
One

Encore 1:
Zoo Station
Singing In The Rain (part) / The Fly / (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction (part)
With Or Without You

Encore 2:
The Saints Are Coming
Desire / Not Fade Away (part)
Kite

A couple of photos in this post and a few more to be added to my photo gallery over the next day. Sorry couldnt limit the photos too many nice ones.

Well what can I say, I dont like Rap or RnB so I wasn’t looking forward to him. However having said that I gained a new sense of Kanye West when he spoke about how he had an accident almost died and that if it wasn’t for his faith in Jesus he most likely wouldnt be here today (well something along those lines) it made me appreciate him a lot more. Now I still dont like his music but as a fairly big name artist to come out and say those things is quite refreshing. We constantly hear American artists with their token thanking God at awards ceremonies, but this felt really and legit. After looking on the internet of various stories about Kanye it appears to be fairly well backed up. Some of his lyrics are perfect and I am sure he isnt perfect, but who is – there arent many.

Well his show was fairly lack lustre because I didn’t like his music but it was only the forerunner for the main event U2. More on them tomorrow and a stack of photos also.

I am really looking forward to my first ever stadium concert. I have been to a few smaller concerts ie Living End and stuff but never with 50,000 people and never the show that U2 are sure to put on. I have seen some photos from the US & European tour and from the Australian shows so far and the stage setup looks identical to the others – big, loud and spectacular.

I am planning on taking a camera, but not my dSLR – don’t want to get it confiscated and don’t want to have to queue at the cloak room before and after the show – so hopefully I will have some photos for you all. I am going with a group of friends so hopefully from that group we will manage to get some photos. Some of us will be going down early so might mms some photos here during the day of us amusing ourselves.

Well I went out to get the new Living End Live DVD to add to my collection. This was from their recent State of Emergency Tour (May 2006) – not to be confused with their most recent All States of Emergency Tour (Sept 2006). I went to one of their shows at the Thebarton Theatre here in Adelaide, the actual dvd is from one of their Festival Hall, Melbourne (their home town) shows. They are excellent band both studio & live stuff is awesome. This tour was a lot more theatrical and not your typical living end pub gig – it was more like a show than just a gig which is how they usually play, I bought the DVD today and the DVD re-enacts the show very well. Unfortunately I couldnt make their last shows in Adelaide because it was a busy with engagement all weekend, so this made up for that a bit. Only watched in on my computer, cos I was busy doing other stuff on the computer at the time. Unforunately the DVD doesnt do justice to the awesome lighting show that they had, but I guess the only way they could have done that was lots of wide shots, which wouldnt have looked as good, but all round an excellent DVD, I’ll have to check out the audio quality on the home theatre some other time.
